L'Iliade est le récit de la guerre de Troie. L'Odyssée raconte le retour d'Ulysse en son royaume d'Ithaque. L'un décrit la guerre, l'autre la restauration de l'ordre. Tous deux dessinent les contours de la condition humaine. A Troie, c'est la ruée des masses enragées, manipulées par les dieux. Dans l'Odyssée on découvre Ulysse, circulant entre les îles, et découvrant soudain la possibilité d'échapper à la prédestination.
Entre les deux poèmes se joue ainsi une très violente oscillation : malédiction de la guerre ici, possibilité d'une île là-bas, temps des héros de côté là, aventure intérieure de ce côté ci. Ces textes ont cristallisé des mythes qui se répandaient par le truchement des aèdes dans les populations des royaumes mycéniens et de la Grèce archaïque il y a 2500 ans. Ils nous semblent étranges, parfois monstrueux.
Ils sont peuplés de créatures hideuses, de magiciennes belles comme la mort, d'armées en déroute, d'amis intransigeants, d'épouses sacrificielles et de guerriers furieux. Les tempêtes se lèvent, les murailles s'écroulent, les dieux font l'amour, les reines sanglotent, les soldats sèchent leurs larmes sur des tuniques en sang, les hommes s'étripent et une scène tendre interrompt le massacre pour nous rappeler que les caresses arrêtent la vengeance.
Préparons nous : nous passerons des fleuves et des champs de bataille, nous serons jetés dans la mêlée, conviés à l'assemblée des dieux, nous essuierons des tempêtes et des averses de lumière, nous serons nimbés de brumes, pénétrerons dans des alcôves, visiterons des îles, prendrons pied sur des récifs. Parfois, des hommes mordront la poussière, à mort. D'autres seront sauvés. Toujours les dieux veilleront.
Et toujours le soleil ruissellera et révèlera la beauté mêlée à la tragédie. Des hommes se démèneront pour mener leurs entreprises mais derrière chacun d'eux, un dieu veillera et jouera son jeu. L'Homme sera-t-il libre de ses choix ou devra-t-il obéir à son destin ? Est-il un pauvre pion ou une créature souveraine ? Les poèmes auront pour décor des îles, des caps et des royaumes dont un géographe, Victor Bérard, effectua dans les années 1920 une très précise localisation.
La Mare Nostrum est ce haut lieu d'où a jailli l'une des sources de notre Europe, qui est la fille d'Athènes autant que de Jérusalem. Mais une question nous taraude. D'où viennent exactement ces chants, surgis des profondeurs, explosant dans l'éternité ? Et pourquoi conservent-ils à nos oreilles cette incomparable familiarité ? Comment expliquer qu'un récit de 2500 ans d'âge, résonne à nos oreilles avec un lustre neuf, un pétillement aussi frais que le ressac d'une calanque ? Pourquoi ces vers paraissent-ils avoir été écrits pas plus tard qu'aujourd'hui, par un très vieux poète à la jeunesse immortelle, pour nous apprendre de quoi seront fait nos lendemains ? En termes moins lyriques (Homère est le seul maître en la matière) d'où provient la fraîcheur de ce texte ? Pourquoi ces dieux et ces héros semblent malgré la terreur qu'ils inspirent et le mystère qui les nimbe, des êtres si amicaux ?
